Gardening

Willow Springs facilitates therapeutic gardening programs with a number of community organizations and groups in Thunder Bay. we are, and we work with professional gardeners and people trained in Horticultural Therapy. We are experts at growing delicious food and beautiful plants and flowers in our short but beautiful Northern growing zone.

Here’s where you can find us getting our hands dirty:

Horticultural Therapy Certification

We've long understood the many health (physical and mental) benefits of gardening. Now we are taking a leadership role in bringing these therapeutic opportunities to those studying or working in the helping fields. Willow Springs is working with Lakehead University's School of Social Work to offer a Therapeutic Gardening Certificate to interested students and community members. The first course runs May 13 - June 17.

“Through the use of plants, gardens, and natural landscapes, learn how the benefits of Horticultural Therapy can improve the lives of diverse populations! Using classroom and hands-on experience, course participants will learn how to effectively use northern plants and horticultural materials for a year-round therapeutic gardening program. The methodology and rationale for the selection of horticultural activities will also be covered (which plants, for whom and why). This non-credit course will be of particular interest to individuals in the health care professions (such as social work, therapeutic recreation, nursing, physiotherapy, occupational therapy, and psychology).”
